Behaviour Security Key
7 out of 8 large UK businesses have info security
policy
|
UK
companies have become increasingly aware of
the need to have information security
policies in place, with seven out of eight
large businesses now claiming to have one.
However, the high priority given to
information security by companies does not
necessarily translate into improved security
awareness among employees. Increasingly,
companies are realising that to tighten up
further on information security, they have
to change their people’s behaviour.
These are among the early findings of the
2008 Information Security Breaches Survey (ISBS)
carried out by a consortium, led by
PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, on behalf of the
Department for Business, Enterprise &
Regulatory Reform (BERR). The full results
of the survey will be launched at

ABBYY
Recognition Server 2.0
New OCR and PDF conversion solution released
|
ABBYY, a
leading provider of document recognition,
data capture and linguistic technologies,
today announced Recognition Server 2.0, the
next generation of its OCR and PDF
conversion solution. Version 2.0 extends the
capabilities of Recognition Server with a
variety of new functions, new input/output
formats and the ability to communicate or
integrate with new systems and technologies.
Its compatibility with service-oriented

SharePoint New Lotus Notes
CMS Watch cites pros and cons
|
Microsoft
Office SharePoint Server 2007 is repeating
history as it mimics the allure and pitfalls
of Lotus Notes, according to research
released today by CMS Watch, an independent
analyst firm that evaluates content
technologies.
SharePoint exploits traditionally
underserved collaboration needs for
information workers labouring within Office
tools, and fulfils a common desire to easily
create disposable workspaces, CMS Watch
found.
Like Notes in a previous decade, IT often
embraces SharePoint as a simple answer to
myriad business information problems. But
the platform can easily morph into a
technical and operational morass, as
repositories proliferate, and IT comes to
recognize that various custom applications
require highly specialized expertise to keep
running properly.

|
XVEL
Software have just released a new version of
their batch binarization software called
Binarization Image Processor (BIP).
BIP dramatically saves time when preparing
high-quality bitonal documents in TIFF, PDF
and JBIG2 formats.
Created especially for professionals
involved with paper and microfilm scanning
and digitization, BIP's use of cutting-edge
techniques including dynamic thresholding,
local area adaptive binarization and OCR
preparation thresholding to binarize images
is what sets it apart from the rest of the
competition.
New version (1.24) enables pre-processing of
color and grey-scale images. Now you can
deskew, rotate, mirror and negate the colors
of image before binarizing it.

actions like confirming image saves.
Elimination of this redundancy alone
generates a time savings of up to 90%.

What did

Alarming 50% of UK kids waste time on Facebook AT
SCHOOL
|
Global
Secure Systems (GSS) a leading IT security
consultancy, has uncovered the alarming
reality that UK school children are studying
social networking websites during their
lessons instead of what they should be
concentrating on. In its survey, conducted
through Facebook, to discover just how
widespread the issue of children visiting
sites of this nature at inappropriate times
is, a staggering 52 per cent of the 1000
children aged between 13 and 17 who
participated, confessed that they did so
during lessons. Over a quarter admitted they
were doing so for in excess of 30 minutes a
day!
The initial discovery was made by David
Hobson, managing director of GSS, when he
spent a day at a local public school
speaking to its pupils about Internet ethics
and behaviour. During his presentation to a
class of 13 year olds, who were all
diligently tapping away on their laptops, he
asked how many had visited social networking
sites during their lessons. David was
astounded when they all raised their hands!
This ignited his determination to uncover if
this was an isolated case or rife amongst
school children.

UK Enron
Scale Panic (Imminent)
It could be you!
|
The findings of a
survey by document management software company,
Version One (www.versionone.co.uk), highlight that
over three-quarters of senior IT professionals
believe that a case of fraudulent activity on the
scale of Enron could happen in the UK. Version One
carried out the research with 70 senior IT
professionals (IT directors and managers) across a
range of public and private sector organisations.
The survey reveals that 77% of senior IT
professionals believe an Enron-scale scandal could
occur in the UK due to “greed, panic, lax systems
and apathy”. 89% stated that someone in their
organisation would be able to tamper with or ‘lose’
a document to suit their ends whilst 30% admitted
that they had come across activity that could be
considered fraudulent involving business documents.
Two thirds of these stating that they’d witnessed
document fraud “a number of times”. Only a minority
of respondents (6%) feel that current UK financial
regulations would prevent a similar Enron-scale case
of misreporting.

There is much to

course the site to be updated. So this column will
probably only be updated about once a week from now

Origin
of the
(Green Sheet)
Species
Once Upon a Time (in a country far, far away)
In the
USA in 1969 Mitch Badler decided to try and see if
there would be an audience willing to pay for news
in a newsletter format. This was to be about the
people, companies and products in the microfilm
arena. His initial goal was to have a sample issue
ready for distribution at the USA's 1969 industry
show (which was the predecessor to the current AIIM
show). This consisted of a special 'prepublication'
subscription offer. He told a printer friend of his
plan and the friend offered to run off 10,000 copies
of the 6-page newsletter gratis, but on an excess of
green stock he had on hand at the time.
When the first issue came out, it was very
successfully received at the show. Mitch was able to
start printing on a regular basis, and in little
more than a year, he had over 1,000 subscribers.
"The newsletter grew as the microfilm industry
grew." says Mitch, "People at the [original] show
referred to it as 'the green sheet'. They said
things like 'Hey, did you see this green sheet?' I
knew we had no choice other than to run on green
stock regularly, which I didn't mind because it
physically differentiated us from other
publications, particularly two other newsletters in
the microfilm field that started up a few months
after we did. Since they folded within a year even
as we grew, I imagine they were "green" with envy."
That success continued and eventually the
publication was known as the Micrographics and
Hybrid Imaging Systems Newsletter (or MN).
Meantime,
in a Parallel Universe
Some years later, in 1986, Micrographics Marketing
first published a magazine called
Micrographics Marketplace (MMP). Subsidised by
advertising, the free magazine was circulated
throughout the microfilm and document management
industry in the UK. Tim Nixon was the MMP editor,
and the magazine quickly gained a reputation for not
only producing a newsworthy publication, but also
arranging shows and seminars for the industry.
A Star is Born
In January 2002 MN merged with the MMP and the Green
Sheet was born. Now almost 50 issues on it has a
worldwide circulation of over 12,000 recipients,
with the magazine going to over 40 countries. More
recently (2007) there is an extensive web site, and
the former GG Baker and Associates Trade Directory
is incorporated into the overall scheme of things as
the GSM directory. ■
